This fine and old mask from the Dan people of the Ivory coast, formerly in the collection of Baron Freddy Rolin, belongs to the type called Gunyege and represents a masculine spirit. Worn during high speed running games, where one runner pursues another to build strength and fighting skills, the mask features a bulging forehead, protruding mouth and round eyes designed for better vision. These mask were highly revered, considered embodiments of intense forest spirits and were passed on from generation to generation as precious and powerful heirlooms.
