Isac Elam Kaid
B.1991, Alberta, Canada
Lives and works in British Columbia, Canada.
Working across a variety of materials, including stone, gypsum, leather, fur, and wax, Kaid’s work balances solidity with vulnerability to reflect the process of “all time.” His sculptural works have been widely exhibited and published internationally, with commissions held in both private and public collections, including international diplomatic institutions.
Often employing the processes of chiselling, shattering, wrapping, and stacking, Kaid’s works are observations on the cycles of time, ritual and place. For example, some works are conceived by gathering stone fragments, erecting markers of place from destruction and chaos, while others consist of splitting and reconfiguring marble veins, creating new pathways and interventions in time.
Kaid’s selection of stones: lava stone, ardesia, basalt, granite, limestone and marble, are resting points within the geological cycle, from the genesis of magma to the formation of fossilized memory.
Throughout his practice, Kaid’s works are an acknowledgement that we are participants in the concentric cycles of time and transformation, understanding through repeated rituals for attempted knowing.
